Kilmainham Gaol - Behind the Scenes

Kilmainham Gaol opened as the county gaol for Dublin in 1796 but its main fame comes from its association with the struggle for Irish independence. It was the site of the executions of the leaders of the 1916 Rising and has been a place of imprisonment for historic figures such as Robert Emmet, William Smith O'Brien and Charles Stewart Parnell.

While Kilmainham Gaol is well known to Irish people and visitors from abroad, this visit will allow IMA members and their guests the chance to see parts of the building not normally on display to the public. It is also hoped to show some of the very delicate and rare graffiti which dates from the Civil War period and which, again, is not normally seen by the public tour. There will also be a chance to see some items from the Kilmainham Gaol Museum collection and the archives building.
