The Hunt Museum, Limerick

Camille Giraud Akeju, Director of the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum, gave the 2014 IMA & ICOM Ireland lecture, 'Off The Mall: The Smithsonian's small but mighty community  museum', on the 11 September at the Hunt Museum, Limerick at 6.30pm.

Camille Giraud Akeju has been Director of the Smithsonian Institution's Anacostia Community Museum since 2005. Her impressive CV includes appointments with the Harlem School of the Arts, New York City; The Valley Inc., Harlem, NY; Mind-Builders Creative Arts Center, Bronx, NY; New York Transit Museum and the Association of Community-Based Artists of Westchester.

Ms Akeju has served as a peer reviewer with the Multicultural Arts Initiative in Pittsburgh, a funding review panelist for the New York and New Jersey state councils on the arts, the US Department of Education's 21st Century Initiative and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. She has also served on many not-for-profit governing and advisory boards over the years, such as the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts; Mt. Vernon Family YMCA; and Jazzmobile, Inc. She received the Crowned Jewel Award for Women in Leadership (2003) from C. Ottley Strategies Inc., New York City, and the Recognition of Service to Youth Award from Open Eyes Productions Inc. (1996).

Ms Akeju holds a BA in Fine Arts and a MA in Art History from Howard University in Washington, DC.

This lecture is programmed as an annual collaboration between the Irish Museums Association and ICOM (International Council of Museums).
