IMA Annual Conference

2022 Irish Museums Association Annual Conference

Part of the Solution. Supporting Environmental Sustainability in Museums

24 October, Dublin

Climate change is the single greatest threat to a sustainable future but, at the same time, addressing the climate challenge presents a golden opportunity to promote prosperity, security and a brighter future for all. Ban Ki-Moon, Former Secretary-General of UN

Law Society of Ireland, Dublin. 24th October 2022

Efforts to reduce emissions contributing to climate change is happening in all areas of our society and Museums, as community-focused institutions, have a responsibility of consciousness to raise awareness, share knowledge, and enact change as we collectively seek to reduce our environmental impact.

The IMA conference 2022 presented an opportunity to explore the cost to the environment of how our buildings, programming, and practices function; what are the changes necessary to ensure that we reduce contributing factors while ensuring the museum’s effectiveness and success; and how can we use our collections and position as trusted organisations to encourage others to examine their own decision-making and behaviours.

Over the course of this one-day event, we heard from policy influencers and practitioners on the ground, with an emphasis on practical approaches and innovative ‘green’ measures, from curatorial to public engagement practices, so action can be taken without further delay.

Contributors included Mary Frances Rochford, Programme Manager, Climate Change and Circular Economy, Environmental Protection Agency; Dr Cathy Daly, Senior Lecturer in Conservation at the School of History & Heritage at the University of Lincoln, U.K; Shane Clarke, CEO Garden-City-Culture; Paolo Viscardi, Curator, National Museum of Ireland; Eithne Verling, Director of Galway City Museum; Ruža Leko, Co-founder & Creative Director, StudioSuss; Johnathan Dalzell, Director of Northern Ireland Museums Council (NIMC); Claire Walsh, Assistant Curator: Collections, IMMA (Irish Museum of Modern Art) and Henry McGhie, Founder and CEO of Curating Tomorrow.
