Training & Development

The Irish Museums Association is committed to running a programme of high quality and relevant training events to meet the needs of those working across the museum and cultural/heritage area throughout Ireland. We aim to foster both practical skills and encourage critical thinking about museums and their role in society.

Central to our work is Museum Basics, a foundation course for those working in the small and voluntary museum sector, which includes modules on Introducing Museums, Conservation, Education, Documentation, Marketing, Management and Governance, and Collections & Collecting.

Due to the nature of this course and the high demand for places, the IMA does not currently accept requests from individuals for registration on the Museum Basics course.

Invitations are instead issued through the host organisation which will be the local authority museum, development organisation and/or Heritage or Arts Officer. Please contact these directly to request or check whether a course is being planned in your locality.

IMA Education and Training also organises one day training sessions on subjects such as Museums & Volunteering, Museums & New Communities, and Museums and Web 2.0. We are always interested in hearing suggestions for training programmes and in co-partnering with other organisations. To develop your skills check our News page for current formal and informal training opportunities.
