The IMA and MA (UK) will be presenting the session "War & revolution: museums and contested histories in Ireland" at the American Alliance of Museums Annual Meeting and Expo on the 7-10 May 2017 in St Louis, Missouri. Speakers Lar Joye, National Museum of Ireland; Brian Crowley, Pearse Museum, OPW and Paddy Gilmore, NMNI will responding to the Decade of Commemorations and Ireland 2016 under the track, Forces of Change.
The session, jointly proposed by the IMA and MA, was selected for inclusion in the 2017 Annual Meeting prgramme by the National Programme Committee from over 400 proposals. The session will provide an opportunity to key museum staff in Ireland to explore how museums on both sides of the border have commemorated the Decade of Centenaries in Ireland and how they have dealt with the contested histories of these significant events. Speakers from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland will reflect on how museums have interpreted these historic events and how they have worked with communities to explore what they mean to contemporary Irish society. The session will also examine whether museums can be neutral in the presentation of "the facts" and how we can recognise the multiple narratives that we and our communities can bring to the story.
