Galway City's Heritage Officer, Jim Higgins, and Galway City Museum are calling on members of the public to seek out old family photographs that may be used for a new maritime exhibition in the Museum, to coincide with the Volvo Ocean Race. The aim of the exhibition is to present personal images and stories of Galway City's seafaring community through the years. The curators are keen to stress that they are not seeking professional photographs, but rather the hidden gems that may be lying in an old family album.
Sailors mending nets, working on the boats, down by the pier, out in the currach, or indeed just at rest - are but some of the examples of the types of photos being sought, according to the curators of this exhibition. The photographs can be brought to the Museum and will be scanned and returned instantly - so there is no fear of parting with precious images.
